GÜN operates in its firms using the business model it has developed

According to this model, the firms have been divided into Design and Projects, Trade and Logistics, Construction and Production, Financial – Administrative Affairs and IT departments

The foundation of GÜN goes back to 1951 and to the furniture workshop Yılmaz Gün has founded, located in Maltepe. Combining his technic professional education with customer demands, Yılmaz Gün is one of the first craftsmen who has moved his workshop to Siteler – an organized industrial site in Ankara which is also a hub for furniture producers – while it was still being developed. Yılmaz Gün carries out boutique home furniture production along with retail; and has built the business sense that has identified GÜN MOBİLYA with quality. Melih Gün has joined the management of GÜN MOBİLYA in 1985, upon completion of his education at METU Department of Industrial Design.

Launching out to the contract hotel furniture sector with the Hilton Ankara project in 1987, GÜN MOBİLYA has entered the corporate institutionalization process corresponding with efficient development requirements. Within this framework;

GÜN has meticulously undertaken the mission to design and plan the environment, location and product variety that will satisfy their customers needs and prosper their lives. Aiming for efficiency and sustainable competition during this process, GÜN also carries out mutual industrial collaborations with universities. These collaborations, which have become one of GÜN’s responsibilities, are beyond a civil society initiative. They are an obligation caused by the insufficiency of academic and practical trainings uniting with each other. Aware of the fact that producing common benefit for the society is the ultimate goal, GÜN collaborates with various educational institutions such as METU, Bilkent, TOBB, Başkent Universities and vocational high schools, in order to enhance the sector it is active in. These collaborations intend for students to gain practice in subjects relative to application such as material, production details, expenditure, and time management.

GÜN’s Company Organization

One of the main operation areas of GÜN is Design and Projects . Within the scope of the Design and Projects department, GÜN provides architecture, interior design and product design services as for design; and static, mechanical, electrical, fire, acoustic, material and production services as for engineering. GÜN approaches all construction, architecture, interior design and design projects with a meticulous and creative attitude. The success of a project lies with producing it, managing it and inspecting it besides just designing it. Consequently, the Design and Project department also undertakes project and administrative responsibilities at essential periods according to the project’s requirements. Additionally, the Design and Project department provides consultancy services in its field.

GÜN procures the variety that will satisfy all kinds of needs with its Trade and Logistics department. According to GÜN functionality, esthetics and the acquisition of high standard products and materials is key to all projects. The main duties of this department are tenders, material retail, procurement, storage and dispatch. Another duty of the Trade and Logistics department includes assisting the Design – Projects and Construction – Production departments to suggest and arrange the materials and/or services needed at the right time, the right price and the right quality. The operations of this assistance form the backbone of the brand management and marketing strategies.

The personnel at the Trade and Logistics department must have knowledge on technical specifications, current trends and world markets. It is critical that these personnel can study projects correctly especially during offer preparations, conduct quantity controls when necessary, understand the material requested, plan this materials replacement and provide it when necessary.

Another field of operation of GÜN is Construction and Production. GÜN’s production scope includes wood, surface treatments, metal, upholstery and assembly in its factory located in Akyurt, Ankara. The construction branch deals with turn-key projects from ground-zero to delivery including rough construction, finishing construction works, mechanical, electrical, technical installations and decoration. Analyze, planning, execution, assembly acceptance and delivery are under the responsibility of the Construction and Production department.

The Construction and Production staff mostly consists of engineers and personnel with a technical training. These personnel must have knowledge on material, production and construction details and production processes as well as being adequate in tracking execution processes, analyzing materials and managing staff.

The Financial – Administrative Affairs department administers budget, accounting, finance, legal and administrative affairs. The department tracks budgets, examines the situations in which the budget doesn’t add up, cautions and verifies that the situation is revised. It is also responsible for liabilities towards the government and personnel affairs.

A business that cannot manage money and the operation processes cannot survive. Therefore, the Financial – Administrative Affairs department must act both as the rearview window and as the headlight of the business. It is favorable that the staff of this department to have a business management or economic studies education background. Besides this education, the staff must have knowledge on production and construction processes.

The most important duty of the IT department is to provide a platform on which all fields of operation can work in-sync. The operations being conducted on a single platform must at all times be able to produce reports and should be open for inspection. The management depends on correct information, therefore the trustworthiness of these reports to make the right calls. It is obligatory that all departments be engaged in an effective and synchronous communication. A flexible and problem solving system is required for problem detection and solution. The IT department is also responsible for all hardware and software of the company. GÜN uses Microsoft Share Point Server and Navision platforms for all operations; all processes, cost calculations, and project follow-ups.

The Business Model Adopted By GÜN

GÜN directs all business affairs on project basis.

A Project Manager, from the staff pools belonging to the above-mentioned departments, is appointed according to the properties and the workload of a specific project. For the project he is appointed to, the project manager is responsible for managing and coordinating all processes; processes related to Design – Projects, Trade – Logistics, Construction – Production, and Financial – Administrative Affairs. In order to accomplish this, employees from all staff pools are appointed to the project manager, according to the specificities of the project. We call this system, which creates temporary organizations on a project basis, “Matrix Organization”.

GÜN has accomplished an effective work environment for project management using “Matrix Organization”. Thanks to the flexible structure the organization system provides, an employee can be assigned to more than one projects, at the same time. While appointed, employees provide the required assistance to the project from their own departments. Furthermore, a project manager of one the projects, can also be appointed as a team member to one of the other projects. When a project is completed, the job of the created team is also completed; therefore all members of the team return to their staff pools.

The team members comply with their project manager in terms of the project while, being managed by the department managers in terms of their work quality. It is essential for the project managers to have reached the experience level to work compatibly with all disciplines involved, although they are proficient in another field.

For maximum efficiency, it is important that the project managers be qualified in the processes as well as their technical abilities. Faculties such as architecture, interior design and construction engineering equip their students with technic information; while business management and industrial design faculties equip students with knowledge related to business processes. However, these programs rarely succeed in equipping the students with the required ability to manage a business in practice. Project managers must be educated and experienced in aspects such as epitomizing correctly, studying and analyzing projects, preparing offers, examining production processes, foreseeing potential problems, and determining costs as well as subjects like project contracts, shipment and logistics; which are topics relating to several educational disciplines.

Summed up, the business model GÜN has adopted is forming business partnership-like structures for each project, using existing field of operation staff pools.
